Description

This paper analyzes the Magdalena and Atrato river basins in Colombia, highlighting their environmental challenges. The Magdalena basin, which supplies 90% of the population, faces a serious crisis due to industrial, mining and agricultural pollution, as well as deforestation and changes in land use, which affects biodiversity and fisheries. The Atrato watershed, with a smaller population and greater forest cover, suffers similar impacts, although to a lesser extent, but they could worsen without adequate management. Integrated resource management, with collaboration between authorities and communities, is recommended to protect ecosystems and ensure the sustainability of fisheries.
