Description

The article examines the European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) and its impact on global commodity chains, with a particular focus on its actual effectiveness, risks and limitations. It explores the theory of policy change based on existing research on zero deforestation commitments, private standards and trade patterns in major producing countries such as Brazil, Colombia and Indonesia. Although the EUDR aims to curb deforestation by regulating imports, the article argues that its unilateral, demand-driven, value-chain-focused approach may limit its effectiveness. The authors believe that regulation must be complemented by international cooperation, stronger land policies and social movements that address the root causes of forest loss and human rights violations to have a lasting impact.
