Description

The blog post highlights the importance of agricultural insurance as an essential tool to mitigate risks in the agricultural sector, especially in a region as vulnerable to natural disasters as Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC). The post explores the experiences of Bolivia, Mexico and Chile, which have implemented government-supported agricultural insurance programs. In Bolivia, the Pachamama Universal Agricultural Insurance covers the poorest farmers through a full subsidy, while in Mexico, the Catastrophic Agricultural Insurance and other financial instruments such as catastrophic bonds, managed by Agroasemex, help cover natural disasters. Chile, for its part, offers the Support Program for the Contracting of Silvo-Agricultural Insurance and the INDAP Program, which subsidize insurance premiums to protect farmers against various climatic risks.
