Tracking progress on food and agriculture-related SDG indicators 2022
Technical report
31/12/2022
Description
The FAO report assesses progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) linked to food and agriculture. It highlights how the COVID-19 pandemic has reversed the progress made, leading to a significant increase in food insecurity and extreme poverty. In 2021, between 702 and 828 million people faced hunger, equivalent to an almost total loss of the progress in reducing hunger achieved in the last decade. It also addresses the increase in severe food insecurity, which affected 11.7% of the world's population in 2021. In addition, the report highlights inequalities in land tenure and access to resources between small and large producers, revealing that small producers, especially women, continue to have significantly lower productivity and income. It emphasizes the need to promote more resilient agricultural systems and to improve data collection to more accurately monitor progress towards the SDGs, which is crucial to anticipate future crises and design effective responses.
