Geopolitical transformations: A new international context

In the framework of the Workshop: Towards a new generation of public policies for agri-food systems, held on August 28, 2024 at the IICA-Panama Representation, Martín Piñeiro presented Geopolitical Transformations: A New International Context. It addresses how geopolitical transformations are affecting global agri-food trade, highlighting the need for countries to evaluate their international position and adjust their food development strategies, aligning them with new realities and the use of their natural resources. It also emphasizes the urgency of advancing the development of solid agri-food systems adapted to the particularities of each country, complemented by flexible policies that include the bioeconomy as a way to diversify products. In this context, the importance of taking advantage of advanced technologies such as biotechnology, artificial intelligence and information technology to improve the competitiveness of the sector is mentioned. Another key aspect is the adoption of environmental standards and obtaining certifications that reinforce the sustainability of agricultural products.
