The article highlights the need for more ambitious global measures to combat tropical deforestation and forest degradation, as well as the associated human rights issues It analyzes the EU's trade policy instruments and transnational governance mechanisms for these purposes, and evaluates how the EU and Brazil can mitigate illegal timber trade and risky agricultural products for forests The document identifies deficiencies in identifying illegalities in production and trade, suggests solutions, and emphasizes the importance of political will and effective use of regulatory policies to achieve international standards of legality and sustainability It concludes that a combination of existing and emerging policy instruments can ensure legal and sustainable trade and production practices that support the protection of tropical forests.
