Description

This text explores the European Union's Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), a new regulation requiring U.S. companies exporting to the EU to provide data on the embedded carbon emissions of their products. Effective from May 2023, CBAM aims to prevent companies from relocating production to countries with looser environmental regulations by imposing a carbon price on certain imported goods. During a transitional phase until January 2026, companies must report these emissions without paying taxes. The article details how this regulation impacts U.S. manufacturers and exporters, their reporting obligations, and the potential consequences of non-compliance, as well as its broader economic and environmental implications globally.
