State of the Climate in Latin America and the Caribbean 2022
Technical report
09/07/2023
Description
The report aims to provide a summary of the state of the climate and extreme weather and climate phenomena in Latin America and the Caribbean during the year 2022, placing them in the context of climate variability and long-term climate change. Among the most notable findings, the report notes that prolonged droughts have had significant negative effects on several economic sectors, such as agriculture, energy, transportation and water supply. In addition, high temperatures and low humidity caused unprecedented forest fires in countries such as Argentina and Paraguay, where significant increases in the number of fire outbreaks and related CO2 emissions were recorded. In terms of adaptation and resilience, the report emphasizes the importance of improving early warning systems and climate services to manage climate risks. Despite progress, many countries in the region still face relevant deficiencies in their weather and climate observation networks, which limit their ability to effectively monitor the climate and issue adequate early warnings.
