Description

This report highlights that legal measures taken by countries and blocs, such as the UK and the EU, to address import-linked deforestation may be insufficient. It points to the risk in Brazil, a major exporter, with 3.25 million hectares of natural habitat at high risk of legal deforestation by 2025. Modifications to its legal framework could legalise agricultural production in illegally deforested areas, indicating that an approach based on legality alone may not be effective and could weaken socio-environmental protection.
