Time for Transparency: Deforestation- and conversion-free supply chains
Technical report
21/05/2024
Description
The report details that deforestation-free is possible: 66 companies reported that their supply chains were 100% deforestation-free, and had corroborating evidence. Transparency is increasing: we asked companies to report their progress, and 445 did so. This is a good start, and now needs to be followed by the thousands of companies that remained silent. There remains much confusion about when products can be considered deforestation-free: more than two-thirds of the companies that disclosed progress did not back up their claims with adequate evidence. This is mainly because they rely on tools and methods that are not adequate (or transparent enough) to demonstrate freedom from deforestation. Manage what you control: the report is based on a clear and simple key performance indicator: the percentage of a company's product volumes that are free of deforestation. The methods and guidelines for calculating this indicator can now be improved based on what has been learned in this report. It is time to get down to work: disclosure on deforestation in supply chains is not going to go away. In fact, the KPI on % d-free is now a backbone of major reporting standards, disclosure systems and score reports. And this same information will be essential to comply with laws such as #EUDR and the EU Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive.
