Description
We have entered an era of polycrisis where conflict, climate change and the lingering effects of the COVID-19 pandemic threaten progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The pandemic has reversed gains in health, education and the economy, increasing extreme poverty and global inequality. In 2023, conflict and human rights violations displaced 110 million people, the highest number on record. In addition, the climate crisis is worsening with rising global temperatures, frequent natural disasters and alarming plastic pollution in the oceans.
Recovery from the pandemic has been uneven, and developing countries face mounting debts and fiscal constraints. Urgent reforms in global governance and financial institutions are needed to give these countries a voice. The SDG Summit in September will be crucial to renew commitments and promote concrete actions towards the SDGs. Despite the challenges, the 2030 Agenda remains an essential guide. It is vital that leaders and citizens work together to achieve the SDGs, ensuring a sustainable future for humanity and the planet.
