Food Waste Index Report 2021

UNEP's 2021 Food Waste Index Report highlights the significant issue of food waste, noting its contribution to global greenhouse gas emissions and the burden it places on waste management systems. This report aligns with Sustainable Development Goal 12.3, which aims to halve food waste and reduce food losses by 2030. It is estimated that 931 million tons of food are wasted globally annually in households , commercial establishments and food services, In addition, the report introduces a methodology that countries can adopt to more accurately measure food waste at the level of households, businesses and food services. This methodology is crucial for tracking progress towards the 2030 target and involves direct measurement to ensure its reliability.
