Description
The European Commission has proposed to increase import tariffs on certain agricultural products such as wheat, corn, barley and millet, as well as to impose a second tariff of 50% on oilseeds and vegetable oils from Russia. This measure seeks to mitigate the risk for European markets and farmers, in the midst of the conflict between the EU and Russia over the former's support for Ukraine. The president of the EC, Ursula von der Leyen, argues that these tariffs will weaken the Russian economy and reduce its capacity to finance the war. However, Moscow considers this proposal as unfair competition and detrimental to European consumers.
