In July 2021, the European Commission launched the Fit for 55 package with the aim of reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the European Union by 55% by 2030. This package includes the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) , initially aimed at various industrial sectors. The introduction of this tax has sparked global debates and concerns, including possible greenwashing effects and accusations of climate protectionism and neocolonialism against the European Union. Although its impact on the subregion is expected to be limited, it is crucial that countries prepare for this initiative and future similar actions, through the implementation of labor policies and support for the most vulnerable sectors. The coordination of trade and climate change adaptation policies, as well as the formation of regional alliances, are essential to face the coming climate challenges.
