Description

This article investigates the adoption of sustainable agricultural activities with a longitudinal sample of households in Ouro Preto de Oeste, Rondônia, Brazil. Using data collected in 1996 and 2000, the choice between technologies of slash-and-burn and alternative agricultural practices, as well as the relationship between the use of sustainable agricultural systems and household deforestation levels are discussed. Recommendations as to how policy can influence the adoption of sustainable agricultural practices and slow deforestation in the Amazon are provided.
