The State of World Food Security and Nutrition 2023
Technical report
20/11/2023
Description
This publication provides an update on global progress towards the targets on eradicating hunger (SDG target 2.1) and malnutrition in all its forms (SDG target 2.2). This report shows that global hunger remained relatively unchanged between 2021 and 2022, but remains well above pre-COVID-19 pandemic levels and is also increasing in many places where people are still struggling to recover from income losses suffered in the wake of the pandemic or have been affected by rising prices for food, agricultural inputs and energy, and conflict and extreme weather events. This report also provides updated estimates of the billions of people who cannot afford nutritious, safe and sufficient food throughout the year. Overall, it shows that we are a long way from meeting all nutrition targets. While progress on important child nutrition indicators is evident, the rise in overweight and obesity in children under five years of age in many countries portends increasing burdens of noncommunicable diseases.
