Australian Bureau of Meteorology finally declares the presence of El Niño in the Pacific
Alert-notification
19/09/2023
Description
This alludes to warming in the center of the central equatorial Pacific (Global El Niño). Confirmation of an established El Niño increases the likelihood that the event will persist through the summer. Therefore, 3 of the 4 conditions that characterize a Global El Niño are present. Due to the advanced stage of the year and the proximity of summer, this edition of El Niño Global would reach a moderate to strong magnitude in the last quarter. The unusual delay in which the atmosphere is responding to ocean warming makes this event very different from the other major Global El Niños we have observed in the satellite era (1979 onwards): 1982-3, 1997-8 and 2015-6.
