Description

This publication is the first technical guide to support the establishment of silvopastoral systems (SSP) in the Azuero Peninsula of Panama, a region where the culture and land use traditions are defined by centuries of conventional cattle ranching. Conventional cattle ranching is expansive, lacks trees and causes extensive deforestation and land degradation. Fortunately, producers in the region are beginning to implement sustainable alternatives, including silvopastoral systems. The information in this guide comes at an opportune time to inspire and support producers to adopt more sustainable livestock practices that help restore the region's environmental services and improve livelihoods and culture. This guide is based on a decade of ELTI's experience implementing the first silvopastoral projects on the Azuero Peninsula, in collaboration with the Asociación de Productores Pecuarios y Agrosilvopastoriles de Pedasí (APASPE).
