World Meteorological Organization declares the onset of El Niño conditions

The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) declared the onset of El Niño conditions and forecasts a 90% probability of the event continuing during the second half of 2023. It is expected to be at least of moderate strength. Furthermore, there is an estimated 66% probability that the global annual average temperature near the surface between 2023 and 2027 will temporarily exceed 1.5 °C above pre-industrial levels for at least one year.
