Strengthening coffee and cacao value chains in the provinces of Carchi, Imbabura and Esmeraldas

Start Date: 20/07/2020
End Date: 19/01/2023

Description

The provinces of Carchi, Imbabura and Esmeraldas are characterized by high levels of poverty. The cocoa and coffee chains represent a strategy for the development of the territories, as a more profitable and sustainable alternative to traditional crops in the region. Despite the dynamics of each chain, there are common characteristics and problems. Coffee and cocoa from the three provinces have organoleptic characteristics that are highly valued in the national and international markets, including those for specialty markets. However, producers continue to face difficulties that limit their income and their share of the benefits along the chains. The project's actions are aimed at improving the income and living conditions of small producers by strengthening the two value chains and producer organizations in their productive, governance, advocacy and associative marketing capacities, with the promotion of the economic inclusion of women and young people.
