Enhancement of Animal Production Systems in the Andean Region

Start Date: 01/12/2014
End Date: 31/12/2018

Description

This project aimed to develop technical capacity for measuring enteric methane and nitrous oxide emissions, as well as the ability to propose strategies to mitigate their effects in typical milk production systems in Andean region countries (Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru). The project was structured around five components. The first involved the biophysical and socioeconomic characterization of milk cattle production sites in the co-implementing countries. The second focused on determining enteric methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions in traditional and improved production systems at pilot sites. The third component evaluated feeding strategies for enhancing milk production systems and mitigating their emissions. This component was linked to the fourth, which involved developing gas mitigation scenarios for the pilot sites. The fifth component encompassed the strengthening of research capacities in enteric methane and nitrous oxide, and contributing the mitigation results to public policies.
