50% Subsidy on the Commercial Cost of Urea for Farmers

Start Date: 01/07/2022
End Date: N/A

Description

National initiative implemented by Ecuador's Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock to subsidize 50% of the commercial cost of a 50-kilogram bag of urea. The government allocated USD 27 million to the subsidy, targeting more than 100,000 small and medium-sized farmers across the country's 24 provinces. Producers must be registered in the Ministry's systems and purchase the fertilizer from authorized suppliers, paying half of the price; the supplier subsequently invoices the subsidized amount to the Ministry. Urea is mainly intended for rice, maize, wheat, potato, pasture, sugar cane and fruit crops.

Observations

The source reports a public budget of USD 27,000,000 and a subsidy equal to 50% of the commercial cost. An estimated farmer counterpart contribution of USD 27,000,000 and an estimated total cost of USD 54,000,000 are recorded. These two amounts are arithmetic calculations derived from the reported subsidy percentage and must be validated. Ecuador uses the United States dollar, so an exchange rate of 1 USD per USD is applied. The publication is dated 20 July 2022 and states that the benefit would be available from 1 July 2022. No completion date was identified.
