El Ceibo brings together 49 grassroots cooperatives throughout the Alto Beni region in Bolivia. It includes over 1,500 member families. The cooperative processes chocolate and currently exports it to European countries such as Germany, Switzerland, Italy, and France; and reaches Japan and other parts of Asia under the Bolivian “El Ceibo” label. Currently, 67% of its total production is exported, and 90% of that goes to fair trade organizations. El Ceibo is one of the most recognized cooperative experiences in Bolivia since 1977, and is an excellent example of cooperation, self-management, democracy, ecology, and business and social sustainability.
