Enhancing Paraguay’s capacity to promote the provision of ecosystem services and conservation of biodiversity in protected areas to improve climate change mitigation and adaptation interventions

The project aims to improve the technical and financial capacity of national authorities to design and implement climate change mitigation and adaptation practices in protected areas (PAs). The project focuses on strengthening strategic frameworks, improving monitoring capacity and financial sustainability of PAs, and developing concept notes for the submission of climate change mitigation and adaptation projects to the Green Climate Fund (GCF). Project actions include conducting assessments on the vulnerability of PAs and native species to climate change, improving monitoring and enforcement practices in PAs, and assessing the financial sustainability of these areas. In addition, it is planned to develop a regulatory framework for private sector participation in identifying nature-based solutions. Consultation and training workshops will be held for the dissemination of results and the development of a climate change strategy for PAs and their buffer zones. The project also envisages the creation of a platform in the Environmental Information System (SIAM) to provide access to information on PAs and climate change to local stakeholders. In this way, it is expected that key actors linked to PAs, such as park rangers, public institution staff, academia, NGOs and civil society, will be able to use the platform to view, examine or download relevant information.
