Achieving rapid decarbonisation of the energy sector in Saint Kitts and Nevis

The project aims to accelerate the transition to 100% renewable electricity generation and high energy efficiency in public buildings in Saint Kitts and Nevis. To achieve this goal, the project includes several components, actions and expected outcomes. The first component focuses on policy and institutional arrangements to decarbonize the electricity sector and improve the energy efficiency of public buildings. Technical assistance will be provided to develop a policy and regulatory framework, including the development of a revised national energy policy and a roadmap for its implementation. A Federal Energy Commission will also be established to coordinate the transition to renewable energy and specific legislation on energy efficiency will be developed. In addition, knowledge management and monitoring systems will be implemented and the technical and regulatory capacity of the government and other key actors will be increased. The second component of the project is the demonstration of energy-efficient buildings and grid-integrated renewable electricity generation, as well as innovative scaling-up models. This will involve investments in the implementation of renewable energy and energy efficiency projects in public buildings, as well as awareness and education campaigns to increase technical, economic, social and environmental awareness of these technologies. The third component seeks to expand financing to achieve the 100% renewable energy goal and energy efficiency measures. Technical assistance will be provided to mobilize investments aligned with national energy policy, innovative utility service models will be developed, and a financing window will be created to accelerate the necessary investments. Work will also be done to increase the capacity of government officials and other actors in the evaluation and structuring of viable financial proposals.
