Research-Innovation genomic studies of animal genetic resources and their interaction with biotic and abiotic effects

Fecha de inicio: 31/12/2020
Fecha de fin: 31/12/2023

Description

The main objective of the project, focused on the conservation and sustainable use of animal genetic resources in Panama, is to maintain the biological diversity of local breeds of domestic animals, many of which are in danger of extinction. Using advanced tools such as genomics and biotechnology, key genes for adaptation to adverse conditions and disease resistance, essential for sustainable animal production, will be identified. It is expected to develop a genetic profile of breeds/genotypes in Panama and a database that includes metagenomic and genetic disease information, which will serve to optimize selection and crossbreeding programs in small producers. In addition, a protocol will be implemented to generate molecular profiles to assist in cases of rust theft and parentage control. This project will directly benefit close to 243 producers and technicians in key regions, and will provide valuable resources for more than 2,000 individuals indirectly, including producers, professionals and students related to agriculture and biotechnology.
