Promotion of sustainable rural economic development Colombia

Start Date: 01/01/2018
End Date: 31/12/2019

Description

The PRODES project sought to strengthen sustainable rural development in selected areas of Colombia, such as Meta, Norte de Santander and Caquetá, integrating economically disadvantaged groups. PRODES II addresses the disconnection of the rural environment from the country's dynamic economic development, using vast arable lands that were previously underutilized or inefficiently used as pastures. The project uses a collaborative strategy between local, regional and national actors to show how economic development can be green and inclusive in rural areas. This collaboration has allowed an increase in income and employment through initiatives such as solar cooling for milk producers, improving the quality and remuneration of the product. In addition, it has promoted certifications of good agricultural practices that raise prices and establish lasting relationships with customers. PRODES II has also extended its successful approaches to other regions of the country, creating new opportunities to implement the peace agreement and improve the prospects of young men and women in rural areas. The continuity and replication of these initiatives are supported by state and private partners, contributing significantly to the generation of income and the promotion of employment in areas affected by the conflict.
