Promoting PES for deforestation-free supply chains in Brazil

Fecha de inicio: 30/04/2024
Fecha de fin: 30/04/2028

Description

The project implemented in the state of Bahia, Brazil, has the main objective of reducing rural poverty by increasing the productivity of recovered ecosystems and paying for the provision of environmental and ecosystem services. It seeks to promote the agroforestry transition of cocoa growing areas towards production arrangements that are less dependent on external inputs, more profitable and with greater potential to provide ecosystem services. The main actions of the project include the implementation of a PES (Payment for Environmental Services) mechanism, both monetary and non-monetary, that allows the "permanence" of the standing forest by incorporating the best agroforestry management practices by rural producers. and the enrichment of the diversity of forest species in existing cocoa areas. In addition, PES policies will be strengthened at the municipal and regional levels through a participatory governance process to promote PES policies in the Southern Bahia Cocoa Region.
