Description

The development objective of the Sustainable Fisheries Development Project is to improve the management of priority fisheries and enhance economic opportunities from these fisheries for Costa Rica. This project consists of four components: 1) Strengthening Governance and Management of Fisheries Resources: The main objective of this component is to support the strengthening of institutional capacities, regulatory frameworks, and other public sector actions necessary to improve climate-informed governance and management of priority marine and coastal fisheries. 2) Investing in Sustainable Fisheries Value Chains: This component aims to create an enabling environment for sustainable growth and greater climate resilience in the fishing and aquaculture sector by supporting public investments in critical infrastructure and related services to improve the business climate for viable private sector investments. 3) Strengthening Mechanisms for Social and Environmental Sustainability: This component focuses on supporting efforts to ensure that the transition to a sustainable fisheries management regime addresses short-term socioeconomic costs while increasing the environmental (including climate-related) benefits associated with this transition. 4) Project Management, Monitoring, and Communications: This component aims to strengthen the capacity of the Costa Rican Institute of Fisheries and Aquaculture (INCOPESCA) to administer, implement, monitor, and report on project activities.
