Description
The Liliendaal Declaration on Climate Change and Development, issued during the thirtieth meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) in July 2009, underlines the urgency of addressing climate change to protect sustainable development and achieve international goals such as the Millennium Development Goals. In the declaration, the leaders reaffirmed their commitment to the community's principles, including CARICOM's single market economy, and highlighted the need for urgent, ambitious and decisive action to significantly reduce global greenhouse gas emissions and support island states in their adaptation to the impacts of climate change. They also committed to supporting IPCC research, actively participating in international conferences on climate change, and implementing regional strategies for better management of natural disaster risks. In addition, they highlighted the importance of strengthening institutional and educational capacities to manage natural resources sustainably and promote the development of renewable energies.
