The General Climate Change Law of Mexico is a comprehensive regulatory framework that regulates mitigation and adaptation actions to climate change throughout the national territory. This law establishes the bases for coordination between the federation, states and municipalities in the formulation and application of public policies in this matter. Its main objective is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve the resilience of the population and ecosystems to the impacts of climate change. The law promotes education and research on climate change, technology transfer and innovation, and establishes mechanisms for consultation with society. In addition, it seeks to promote a competitive and sustainable economy, with low carbon emissions. At a strategic level, the law proposes strengthening national capacities to respond to the phenomenon of climate change, and contribute to global efforts such as those established in the Paris Agreement, keeping the increase in global temperature below 2°C.
