Description

The Climate Change Law for the State of Querétaro, Law No. 136, was enacted on June 22, 2016. This law establishes the framework for climate action in the state of Querétaro, including both mitigation and adaptation to climate change. Its objectives are to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and achieve emission neutrality within the state, adapt to the impacts of climate change, and encourage civil societys participation in climate action. The law sets up a state-level climate action system, led by the Secretariat of Sustainable Development (SEDESU), which is responsible for formulating, implementing, and evaluating the states climate change policy. The system is based on state-level climate policies and strategies, a periodically updated state climate action plan, and regular monitoring and evaluation. The law also includes provisions for penalties and sanctions for individuals and entities that fail to comply with it. This law is a crucial instrument for advancing climate action in the state of Querétaro, providing a structured approach to reduce emissions and enhance resilience to climate change impacts.
