Description
The Climate Change Law of the State of Sonora, Law No. 206, was enacted on June 22, 2016. This law provides the framework for climate action within the state of Sonora, covering both climate change mitigation and adaptation. The law outlines the following objectives: to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and achieve emission neutrality within the state, to adapt the state to the impacts of climate change, and to promote civil society's participation in climate action. It establishes a state-level climate action system, led by the Secretariat of Sustainable Development (SDS), which is responsible for formulating, implementing, and evaluating the state's climate change policy. The system operates based on state-level climate policies and strategies, a periodically updated state climate action plan, and regular monitoring and evaluation. The law also includes provisions for penalties and sanctions for individuals and entities that fail to comply with it. This law plays a crucial role in advancing climate action in the state of Sonora by providing a structured approach to reduce emissions and enhance resilience to climate change impacts.
