Description

The Climate Change Law of the State of Michoacán de Ocampo, Law No. 273, was enacted on June 22, 2016. This law serves as the framework for climate action within the state of Michoacán, covering aspects of climate change mitigation and adaptation. It sets forth several key objectives: to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and achieve emission neutrality within the state, to adapt to the impacts of climate change, and to encourage the active involvement of civil society in climate action. This law establishes a state-level climate action system, which is led by the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change, and Sustainable Development (SEMACCDS). SEMACCDS is tasked with formulating, implementing, and evaluating the states climate change policy. The system operates based on state-level climate policies and strategies, a periodically updated state climate action plan, and regular monitoring and evaluation. It also includes provisions for penalties and sanctions for individuals and entities that fail to comply with the law. This law plays a significant role in advancing climate action in the state of Michoacán by providing a structured approach to reduce emissions and enhance resilience to climate change impacts.
