United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification in Those Countries Experiencing Serious Drought and/or Desertification, Particularly in Africa

Start Date: 26/12/1996
End Date: N/A

Description

The Convention's fundamental objective is to combat desertification and mitigate the effects of drought through effective measures at the national and international level, recognizing desertification as a problem of significant global importance that affects the environmental, economic and social sustainability of communities in arid, semi-arid and dry subhumid zones. The convention's action plan is based on an integrated approach that combines sustainable land management policies with development and community participation strategies. The lines of action include the promotion of appropriate technologies for the sustainable use of land and water resources, strengthening institutional and community capacities, and the creation of financing mechanisms that ensure sufficient resources to implement strategies to combat desertification.
