Description

The Disaster Risk Management Plan for Guyanas Agricultural Sector is a comprehensive document that outlines strategies and actions to mitigate the sectors vulnerability to natural disasters. Developed by the Ministry of Agriculture, Natural Resources, and Rural Development of Guyana with support from the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations, this plan acknowledges the agricultural sectors susceptibility to various natural threats, including flooding, droughts, strong winds, and tropical storms. It addresses these challenges by emphasizing risk reduction through mitigation measures such as constructing levees and reservoirs to control flooding, developing irrigation systems to combat droughts, and establishing shelters for livestock during strong winds. Moreover, it focuses on disaster preparedness by training farmers in disaster response techniques and creating early warning systems. Lastly, the plan includes a disaster response component to ensure farmers and agricultural communities receive necessary assistance in case of a disaster. By effectively implementing this plan, the vulnerability of Guyanas agricultural sector to natural disasters can be significantly reduced, leading to reduced crop and infrastructure damage, safeguarding livelihoods, and ensuring food security.
