Description

The Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants, adopted on May 22, 2001, has as its main objective to protect human health and the environment from persistent organic pollutants. These contaminants are characterized by their persistence, their capacity for bioaccumulation and their transport over long distances, which makes them present in regions far from their original source of release. The convention recognizes the need for global action due to the magnitude of its impact on health and ecosystems. To achieve its objectives, the Stockholm Convention establishes specific measures, including the elimination or restriction of the production and use of certain products. chemicals listed in its annexes. In addition, it promotes the reduction of emissions from unintentional sources and the safe management of waste that contains these pollutants. The parties to the agreement also commit to promoting alternative management strategies and the adoption of best available technologies to mitigate the release of these contaminants. The agreement emphasizes the importance of international cooperation, technology transfer, and financial assistance to support developing countries in meeting their obligations under the agreement.
