SENASA Resolution 199/2026: Regulatory Framework for the Human and Animal Food-Safety Assessment of Genetically Modified Organisms

SENASA Resolution 199/2026 approves a new regulatory framework for the human and animal food-safety assessment of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and their derived products in Argentina. The regulation modernizes the framework in force since 2002 and introduces a science-based, risk-hypothesis approach that allows information requirements to be tailored to the characteristics of each case and focuses the assessment on aspects relevant to ensuring the safety of food and feed. The National Service for Agri-Food Health and Quality (SENASA), through the Risk Strategy and Analysis Directorate under the National Directorate for Agri-Food Safety and Quality, is the competent authority responsible for conducting the assessments. The Resolution establishes application requirements, scientific principles and criteria, risk-assessment procedures for plant GMOs, confidentiality protections, evaluation mechanisms and penalties for non-compliance. It repeals SENASA Resolution 412/2002 and complements Argentina's updated national regulatory framework governing activities involving genetically modified organisms.
