Climate Resilience Strategy and Action Plan for Guyana, 2015

The project was part of a well coordinated effort by donors active in Guyana, to assist the Government in mitigating the impact of the El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) phenomenon which affected Guyana starting in 1997. The El Niño Emergency Assistance Project was prepared in response to identified emergency prevention and reconstruction needs. The objectives of the project were: (a) help to restore the country's agricultural capacity in drought-stricken areas through vulnerability reduction measures in the areas of hydrologic extremes; (b) help in providing safe and reliable potable water service to marginal urban and remote hinterland and riverine communities which have been affected by drought; and help restore flood protection in low-lying areas of the City of Georgetown.

The NAP Global Network worked with the Ministry of the Presidency of Guyana and the Japan-Caribbean Climate Change Partnership, administered by the UN Development Programme, from 2016 to 2020 to ensure the effectiveness of the country’s NAP process. It boosted public awareness on climate change adaptation processes through communications training programs for media and government staff. The efforts focused on strengthening NAP awareness by developing targeted communication products, including a public service announcement and dedicated government website focusing on climate change.

The NCCC is a multi-stakeholder consultative body re-established to support the operational mandate of the Office of Climate Change (OCC). It is designed to be the premier national body providing scientific, technical, and institutional guidance on international, regional, national, and sub-national climate change processes
