Ecuador's National Contingency Plan for African Swine Fever Prevention, Detection and Control (2025)

The African Swine Fever Contingency Plan for Ecuador, first revised edition, approved on May 7, 2025, by the Agency for Phytosanitary and Zoosanitary Regulation and Control (Agrocalidad), establishes technical and operational procedures for the early detection, rapid response, containment and eradication of African swine fever (ASF) in the event of its introduction into Ecuador. The plan defines institutional responsibilities and coordination arrangements between public and private stakeholders throughout the different phases of a zoosanitary emergency. It includes disease notification and epidemiological surveillance, investigation of suspected cases, sample collection, laboratory diagnosis, establishment of control zones, quarantine, restrictions on the movement of pigs and pig products, sanitary inspections, biosecurity measures, sanitary slaughter and safe disposal of infected animals and contaminated materials. It also provides for cleaning, disinfection, epidemiological follow-up and recovery of sanitary status. The plan seeks to reduce the risk of ASF introduction and spread, protect the health of the national pig population and limit the economic and productive consequences of a potential outbreak. It applies nationwide and represents the 2025 update of Ecuador's ASF contingency planning framework.
