Position (EU) No 6/2026 of the Council on plants obtained by certain new genomic techniques

Position (EU) No 6/2026 of the Council, adopted at first reading on 21 April 2026, sets out the Council position with a view to the adoption of a Regulation of the European Parliament and of the Council on plants obtained by certain new genomic techniques and their products, and amending Regulation (EU) 2017/625. The text aims to establish a legal framework for plants obtained by new genomic techniques, their products, and related official controls. The initiative responds to developments in biotechnology since the adoption of Directive 2001/18/EC on genetically modified organisms and addresses the regulation of techniques such as genome editing applied to plants.
