Ecuador: Resolution SNGR-117-2026 - Declaration of Yellow Alert for El Niño Phenomenon 2026–2027

Start Date: 18/05/2026
End Date: N/A

Description

Ecuador's National Risk Management Secretariat has declared a yellow alert due to the increasing probability (82%) of El Niño developing globally between May and July 2026, with a possible persistence through the December 2026–February 2027 quarter, with moderate to strong intensity. The alert applies to 17 provinces, 143 cantons, and 491 parishes located predominantly below 1,500 meters above sea level, territories with a high historical susceptibility to flooding and landslides. The resolution mandates the activation of Emergency Operations Committees, the strengthening of hydrometeorological monitoring, and the implementation of coordinated evacuation and response plans between the central government and the Decentralized Autonomous Governments.
