Description

This presidential decree establishes the legal and procedural framework for conducting Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs) in Suriname, pursuant to Articles 22 and 25 of the Framework Law on the Environment (S.B. 2020 No. 97). The decree classifies activities with potential environmental impacts into three categories (A, B, and C), defines the procedures for screening, scope, public consultation, preparation of the environmental impact assessment report, and its evaluation by the National Environmental Authority (NMA), and incorporates the principle of Free, Prior, and Informed Consent (FPIC) for activities affecting the territories of indigenous and tribal peoples. It applies to a wide range of productive activities, including aquaculture, livestock farming, agro-industry, agricultural projects, plantations, and water management for agricultural use.
