Peru National Biodiversity Strategy to 2050 (Supreme Decree No. 008-2024-MINAM)

Peru National Biodiversity Strategy to 2050, approved by Supreme Decree No. 008-2024-MINAM, establishes the national strategic framework to halt and reverse biodiversity loss and degradation, promote ecosystem conservation and restoration, and ensure the sustainable use of biodiversity components. The strategy comprises five strategic objectives, twenty-nine national targets and one hundred and forty-three actions guiding public institutions and social stakeholders in biodiversity management. Its priorities include reducing threats and pressures on ecosystems and species, conserving and recovering biodiversity, integrating sustainability considerations into economic activities, strengthening environmental governance, promoting research and information generation, and mobilizing resources for implementation. It incorporates intercultural, equity, participation and sustainability approaches, including a dedicated Indigenous Peoples chapter recognizing the contribution of Indigenous communities to biodiversity conservation. The Ministry of the Environment leads coordination, monitoring and evaluation in cooperation with the relevant institutions. Expected outcomes include improvements in biodiversity status, ecosystem conservation and restoration, transition towards sustainable land use, and stronger governance and institutional capacities. The strategy has national scope and a planning horizon extending to 2050. Its objectives and targets are policy commitments rather than demonstrated outcomes.
