Description
Budget Program 0089: Reduction of Agricultural Soil Degradation is a nationwide public intervention in Peru's agricultural sector aimed at reducing agricultural soil degradation and promoting the sustainable use of soil resources. Implementation has taken place since fiscal year 2013 and involves agricultural-sector institutions, including the Rural Agricultural Productive Development Program (AGRO RURAL), as well as coordination with other levels of government. The target population consists primarily of agricultural producers located in territories affected by soil degradation processes. The program includes interventions to improve soil management and conservation through agronomic practices and mechanical and structural measures, including organic amendments, contour furrows, conservation tillage, infiltration trenches, terraces, gully-control structures and rehabilitation of traditional agricultural terraces, together with training and technical assistance to strengthen producers' capacities. Its relevance to agrifood systems is direct because soil quality and conservation are fundamental conditions for agricultural production. The expected outcome is associated with improved soil health and sustainable use of agricultural soils. Program activities, outputs and targets do not by themselves constitute evidence of verified final impacts on productivity, income, food security or climate resilience.
