Description
The EUDR adoption process in Honduras is a national initiative led by the National Institute for Forest Conservation and Development, Protected Areas and Wildlife (ICF) with technical support from the European Union, coordinating an inter-institutional and multi-sectoral technical working group to ensure that Honduran exports of coffee, palm oil, and cocoa comply with the requirements of Regulation (EU) 2023/1115 applicable. The process comprises five main components: review of legality tables with compilations of laws applicable to production systems, resolution of land tenure issues through legal mechanisms, updating of geospatial databases on forest cover to 2020 for zero-deforestation verification, development of georeferencing systems including a mobile application by IHCAFE for coffee farms, and strengthening of existing traceability systems in production chains. The national strategy integrates government, productive sectors (producers, cooperatives and exporters), and European technical assistance to ensure regulatory compliance while maintaining competitiveness of Honduran products in European markets representing 55% of coffee exports (769 million USD in 2022-2023) and 59.4% of palm oil (339 million EUR in 2021).
