Implementation Strategy for a Sustainable Ocean Economy in Mexico 2021–2024

Start Date: 2021
End Date: 2024

Description

The Implementation Strategy for a Sustainable Ocean Economy in Mexico 2021–2024 is a guiding document that articulates the country's priority actions to transition towards a sustainable ocean economy, based on the five transformation areas of the High Level Panel: ocean wealth, ocean health, ocean equity, ocean knowledge and ocean finance. It was developed through a participatory process involving various Federal Public Administration agencies, civil society organizations and experts, including an analysis of 18 public policy instruments related to the ocean. The main objective is to serve as an articulating guide for national and international plans, programs, actions and initiatives to achieve sustainable management of 100% of the ocean area under national jurisdiction by 2025, guided by Sustainable Ocean Plans. The strategy identifies 11 priority actions ranging from effective protection of marine ecosystems to elimination of illegal fishing, creation of inclusive governance and use of nature-based solutions. This framework represents Mexico's commitment to the High Level Panel for a Sustainable Ocean Economy and contributes to the fulfillment of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, especially SDG 14.
