Design of the Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Action (NAMA) for Sustainable Cattle Farming in Colombia

The design of the Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Action (NAMA) for Sustainable Cattle Farming in Colombia establishes a national strategy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from beef and dairy supply chains, increase carbon storage in livestock agroecosystems, and improve productivity and natural resource efficiency. The document proposes interventions for the 2021-2030 planning horizon, targeting livestock production clusters. Its main mitigation actions include sustainable intensification of cattle production through knowledge management, pasture improvement and adoption of silvopastoral systems; the release of land currently used for cattle production to enable ecological restoration; and the recovery and treatment of organic waste generated in cattle marketing and slaughtering activities. The proposal incorporates technical assistance, knowledge transfer, technology adoption, institutional coordination, greenhouse gas monitoring, reporting and verification, and a strategy to identify and mobilize climate finance sources. It is aligned with Colombia's national climate commitments and the Colombian Low Carbon Development Strategy. For PAESA purposes, it constitutes a climate planning framework with direct agrifood relevance, particularly for cattle production and beef and dairy supply chains. The document presents the design of the NAMA, projected mitigation scenarios and an implementation strategy; projected results should not be interpreted as impacts already achieved.
