Description
Peru’s 2022 Updated National Implementation Plan (PNAA) under the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) assesses the progress made since the initial 2007 plan. As part of this update, inventories of the original 12 POPs were reviewed and updated, and improvements in national infrastructure for POPs management were identified. In both the health and agriculture sectors, nearly all POP pesticides have been banned from import, although pentachlorobenzene remains unregulated. The overall goal is to reduce the use of obsolete and POP pesticides in the country. Specific objectives include strengthening the regulatory framework, enhancing intersectoral monitoring and enforcement, and promoting public health strategies that prioritize alternatives to pesticide use—especially for the control of vector-borne diseases. Transversally, the plan aims to optimize implementation of the Stockholm Convention across public institutions through actions such as reducing health and environmental risks in key sectors (health, mining, electricity, agriculture, transport, and industry), improving the reporting process through the Pollutant Release and Transfer Register (PRTR), raising public awareness of POP risks, and ensuring timely reporting to the Stockholm Convention Secretariat in compliance with national obligations.
