Supreme Decree No. 006-2016-MC: Establishment of the Multisectoral Commission for the Safeguarding and Revaluation of Traditional and Ancestral Knowledge of Indigenous Peoples

Supreme Decree No. 006-2016-MC, published on July 23, 2016, establishes a permanent Multisectoral Commission for the Safeguarding and Revaluation of Traditional and Ancestral Knowledge and Practices of Indigenous Peoples in Peru. The commission is responsible for preparing technical reports proposing regulatory instruments for the safeguarding, protection, promotion and revaluation of indigenous traditional knowledge, as well as monitoring compliance with those instruments once approved. Chaired by the Ministry of Culture, the commission brings together representatives of public institutions and indigenous organizations to coordinate institutional actions concerning the protection and transmission of traditional knowledge. The decree establishes a permanent mechanism for interinstitutional coordination and the development of regulatory proposals. Its scope is multisectoral and cultural, without establishing specific interventions concerning agricultural production, agrifood systems, family farming or food security. The participation of agricultural institutions in the commission does not, by itself, constitute a direct agrifood policy intervention.
